BUSY PHILIPPS INTROS REBECCA GOMPERTS, THROWS TO VIDEO (1:30 MIN)
BUSY:
I want to tell you a story. In 2018 and 2019, I was doing my talk show and I remember that the network wanted us to really stick to entertainment- in other words, to NOT be political.
But as I started to watch as- after YEARS of TRAP laws(targeted restrictions on Abortion Providers) had been quietly passed- the first extreme abortion bans were being passed all over the country- against the will of the majority of Americans but spurred on by extremist right wing politicians who had long ago learned that one way to rally their base was by using women and trans bodies as weapons, and it dawned on me.
Simply existing as a woman in this country IS a political act. It always has been.
When I had an abortion at 15 in my home state of Arizona, I had no idea how much I would be talking about it 25 years later. (It’s literally not even the 10th most interesting thing about me.) First on the talk show, in response to (hopefully former) Governor Kemp of Georgia signing that state’s abortion ban into law. Then in front of a special hearing of the US House Judiciary Committee. And then... honestly, it’s kinda been non stop ever since. Events. Fundraisers. Magazines. Dinner parties.
I didn’t know I would be talking about my abortion so much because perhaps like many of you in this room, I was raised thinking Roe was settled and would never be overturned.
By now, I hope there’s not one person here who doesn’t understand what’s at stake. Both next week and for years to come. Because this has been the plan from the far right for decades. And now, abortion is officially on the ballot.
It is every single one of our jobs to make sure- no matter how safe you think your own personal access to abortion is, that we show up and fight like hell in all the ways we can to ensure that EVERY person in this country who wants an abortion, is able to easily and safely access one.
A lot of times, people expect me to be full of rage about the injustice and the audacity of these politicians -men and women who are not doctors, some who have never been pregnant, and who, let’s be real- probably couldn’t find the clit if you paid them.
But rage only gets you so far. Rage burns you out. And for the people in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, West Virgina, Idaho, North and South Dakota, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah and my home state of Arizona, my rage doesn’t get them the safe abortions that they need.
These days, I’m much more interested in hope and creativity.
Which is why I was thrilled to be asked to introduce Dr. Rebecca Gomperts. As founder and director of Women on Waves and Women on Web, she uses creativity, ingenuity and innovation to provide abortion information and access to anyone who needs it, anywhere in the world at anytime- yes even to people that live in one of those 26 states I just mentioned. We could not be more grateful.
