I listened to this episode in early August. Loved it! Sam Bee is like the close cousin of you both. I miss Toronto--my husband and I have been there many times over the decades. We love staying at our fav condo building in the Church-Wellesley area aka Gay Village. Being in T.O. for at least a month’s stay (preferably 5-6 weeks) saved my sanity over the years.

Re: “kids” movies that you realize were messed up as an adult.

The Baby-Sitters Club 1995 (Rachel Leigh Cook, Schuyler Fisk, Larissa Oleynik) had Stacey pretending she was 16 because she had a crush on the 17 year old French cousin of one of the kids she babysat. He tried to take her to a club in NY where you had to be 16 to get in and she had to admit she was *13*.

Then when Kristy goes missing, she says she knows someone with a car (couldn’t possibly tell a parent), and he somehow drives himself and 6 girls in his VW Bug (real clown car situation) to find Kristy. They do a group hug and he inexplicably joins in, hugging these 11-13 year old girls that he’s never even met. In the rain, even.

Later, he’s going back home and says goodbye to Stacey. He tells her coyly that he’ll be back next summer. She’ll be 14 then.

As an adult, I yelled, “AND YOU’LL BE 18! THAT’S NOT BETTER!”

Extra disappointing that this was written and directed by women. Of course as a kid watching this I totally bought into the older boy fantasy, but I don’t know, as adults writing this, maybe make him a little more age appropriate?

I thought of this movie as well! Mostly bc I watched Rob Anderson’s hilarious review of it on Insta. I was in early high school when it came out and I have no memory of thinking it was inappropriate. Prob more like, oh, that Stacey!

I grew up in Tucson, AZ (about 100 miles from where Busy grew up) where Can’t Buy Me Love was filmed. My dad would often point to the golf course about a mile from our house and say, “They filmed the golf scenes there” (he’s a real film nerd about that kind of thing, which is probably where I get it from.)

Also his step-sister was an extra in some of the high school scenes (I think it’s where she went to high school--but also she wasn’t his stepsister yet at that point, so just a random flimsy connection.)

I don’t even think I watched that movie for years, my dad would just tell me this trivia and I’d nod along and eventually I got around to watching it.

Caissie, that photo of you in this post (the winking one) is sooooo lovely! Like you're pretty in general, but you're extra pretty in that one! Also I think you found the perfect shade of red lipstick for you

After listening to the pod, I am curious about shows like The Gilmore Girls, The Office, etc. that my kids never watched and they have watched on Netflix. I read somewhere Netflix talking about their savings with the strike because they make so much money on these shows and wondering do people get paid on these shows the way they do if they are on cable tv?

The man who plays Kirk on Gilmore Girls had a viral video on IG talking about how he makes next to nothing despite Gilmore Girls being a top streaming title on their service. So I'm guessing they're getting had.

I have recommended so many inappropriate movies for my 10 year old, I now have a paid membership to “common sense media” to double check the content/plot points 😅 We have had so many talks about consent from random scenes from 80s/90s movies 🙄

I’m in southwestern Ontario. I only know of “base” in the iced drinks at Tim Hortons

As a Canadian who frequents Tom Hortons daily for my iced coffee in summer, I can confirm that the iced coffee comes with “base” a sweetened syrup that’s WAY sweeter than sugar. I order mine with “no base”

What part of Canada are you in? I am not a regular Tim Horton's customer, but it's kind of hard to avoid when you're on a road trip! I really have never heard "base" before. I'm just curious to know if it's a regional thing.

I don't think you could ever lie, Caissie! I'm heading home to PEI soon and am going to ask every single person I see about this sugar thing.

This was such a great and informative episode. I learned a lot (and as a Canadian, embarrassed I know so little about Samantha Bee's work.) Thank you! And Caissie, I am from PEI and have never heard of base! It must be an up west thing. ;)

When you were talking about movies and Cricket’s reaction to the Lizzy movie I was thinking about how I saw Saturday Night Fever at the retro movie place in town back when I was in high school circa 1996/97. There’s a full on GR scene in the back of the car while they are driving and I was like excuse me? What? So it seems kids of future generations have continuously evolved to find the movies of their parents completely disgusting throughout the years. Here’s to the youth! May they save us!

I just read an article about that scene. I am appalled. It's wild to think how prevalent it was in media, so much so that we don't even realize how its influence has been steeped into our brains.

Totally. Can you put the link for the article? I would love to read it.

I commented something like this a while back, but I have to ask one more time b/c Busy insta'd about Can't Buy Me Love again...

She talks about how much she loved that movie, yet she later was IN a movie with Patrick Dempsey (Made of Honor) and almost never makes that connection or says how it was to work with someone in a movie she loved as a teen... I'd be interested to hear about how it is to work with ppl you formerly "idolized." Or if they ever talked about the movie. Or anything that just acknowledged the connection.

(and yeah, i can see that probably her no comment on it means it wasn't great... but it's fine to say that too!)

I was also in a movie with Patrick Dempsey, LOL! Though not his co-star. You should submit this question on the Google form from yesterday's post for our upcoming AMA episode. Maybe she'll answer it on the podcast!

Just a quick call-out from a vet tech, I’m assuming Busy, if you’re listening, you aren’t doubling up on flea/tick medication and the topical and collar are different meds or one is more natural? Some ingredients can be toxic in larger doses so more isn’t necessarily better. Just had to throw that out there just in case. 😉

My last name is Mancini, so when I introduce myself to people the most common references I get are:

1. Can’t Buy Me Love - Cindy Mancini

2. Henry Mancini

3. Melrose Place - Dr Michael Mancini and Jane Mancini
